Eating disorders: Transdiagnostic theory and treatment. - The eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and their variants are serious disorders that are accompanied by significant impairment in physical and psychological functioning as well as in quality of life. The transdiagnostic perspective focuses on the common features of the eating disorders. Two major considerations support such a perspective. The eating disorders share a distinctive core psychopathology not seen in other psychiatric disorders. This is the over-evaluation of shape and weight and their control and according to the cognitive behavioral model it is this distinguishing feature that is of central importance in maintaining the eating disorders. Second studies of the course of the various eating disorders have suggested that, over time, patients moved between the various DSM-IV categories.
